The meaning of Landschaftsprobe is multifaceted: making contact with the ground, taking material, leaving an ephemeral trace and generating memory. The individual approach to the landscape is provoked by synaesthetic experience.
Within the framework of a free excursion (Chair of Landscape Architecture and Transformation, Technical University Munich) to the Ruhr area, samples of soils, biotic material, artefacts, etc. were taken at selected locations using a pseudo-scientific analysis tool, and later presented in an exhibition. The samples as well as the corresponding landscape portraits are telling the story of a research team departing with the mission to explore and sensually experience the scarred landscapes and extraterrestrial worlds of the Ruhr area. The researchers stomp through scorched earth and heaped rubble. They appear unexpectedly in their white suits, step out from behind rusty tanks, scrape at gnarled tree trunks, knock off pipes, dig in the damp sand.
Landschaftsprobe as an installation conveys and presents to the viewer what has been experienced. With its exhibited artefacts, it refers to specific landscapes explored during the previous journey and opens up new associative spaces on a visual level.
