Simone Nieweg photographs agricultural landscapes in rural Germany. As a student of the distinguished Kunstakademie Düsseldorf academy in the 1980s, Nieweg has been informed by Bernd and Hilla Becher by documenting structures and physical evidence of human industry, albeit in subtle and unassuming ways. In Typologies, Nieweg photographs gates, trees, and allotment gardens — the peripheries of human existence in small towns. She pursues this subject matter in other projects, where she continues the Becher tradition to document the landscape threatened by extinction. Her lush landscape photographs of the Grabeland, or plots of land available on a short-term lease for cultivation, speak directly to the transitory state of territory and civilization. She currently lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Simone Nieweg photographs agricultural landscapes in rural Germany. While at first unassuming, Nieweg’s pictures of fields, country roads, gates, farm structures, and allotment gardens have a delicate, quiet beauty, stemming from an impeccable attention to composition and a palette of hazy browns and vibrant greens.
